Abstract

Highly crimped regenerated cellulose fibres are produced from viscose by (1) extruding viscose into a coagulating bath or the first of two or more coagulating baths, the specific electrical conductivity of this bath or of the first bath bearing a ratio to that of the viscose of 0.85 : 1 to 1 : 0.85; (2) stretching the filaments so produced, while they travel through an air or steam bath or a further coagulating bath, to such an extent that the elastic limit of the filaments is just not exceeded; and (3) allowing the filaments to contract freely in a tension-releasing bath, the specific conductivity of which bears a ratio to the specific conductivity of the electrolyte contained in the filaments when they enter the releasing bath of 0.7:1 to 1 : 0.7. The coagulating bath may contain 25-980 grams per litre of sulphuric acid, the corresponding concentrations of sodium hydroxide in the viscose being 4.8-8.5 per cent. In an example viscose of 12-13 Hottenroth degrees of ripeness and containing 8 per cent. cellulose, 7 per cent. of caustic soda and 35 per cent. of carbon bisulphide is extruded into a coagulating bath at 43 DEG C. containing, per litre, 115 grams of sulphuric acid, 280 grams of sodium sulphate, and 5 grams of zinc sulphate, to form filaments which are elongated 28 per cent. by passage at 70 DEG C. between two pairs of rollers through the vapour space above a boiling water bath. The filaments are cut and the cut pieces are allowed to shrink freely in a water bath at 70 DEG C. In other examples filaments similarly produced are allowed to shrink freely in a detensioning bath in the uncut condition.
