Abstract
Viscose silk of high tensile strength, for example, 3,5-5 grams per denier, is obtained with the use of a coagulation bath containing 30-55 per cent sulphuric acid and more than 20 per cent of a bisulphate, for example, ammonium or sodium bisulphate. The bath may contain other sulphates and bisulphates, such as zinc, magnesium and aluminium sulphates, and also the usual additions such as glucose, glycerine, and aniline sulphate. It is advantageous to apply to the threads additional stretch either in the coagulation bath, or between the coagulation bath and the collecting device, or at both places. The strength of the threads is higher the finer the individual titre; with titres below one denier, additional stretching is necessary. Ripened or unripened viscose may be used, and it is advantageous if the viscose is prepared from unripened alkali-cellulose; further it is an advantage to arrange that the viscose shall be of high viscosity, either by rinsing the cellulose content or by taking precautions to avoid degradation during its manufacture. The viscose may contain less than 5 per cent of alkali, or quantities larger than this. Specifications 10094/06, [Class 2, Acids and salts, Organic &c.], 274,521, 281,351 and 317,608, [all in Class 2 (ii), Cellulose &c.], are referred to.
