Abstract

In the production of regenerated cellulose threads and films from viscose, there is added to the viscose aqueous ammonium sulphide solution equivalent to 0.5-5 per cent by weight, preferably 0.5-3 per cent by weight, of NH4HS, calculated on the viscose, the viscose is extruded with a gamma value of 40 or more into an aqueous coagulating bath containing sodium sulphate, more than 30 g./l. of zinc sulphate and 40-65 g./l. of sulphuric acid, the threads or films so formed being decomposed to regenerate the cellulose and stretched by 80-120 per cent in a hot aqueous bath containing sodium sulphate, zinc sulphate and dilute sulphuric acid. The viscose preferably has an alkali-cellulose ratio of less than 1 : 1, particularly 0.5 to 0.8 : 1. The coagulating bath preferably contains 160-260 g./l. of sodium sulphate and is preferably at 50-70 DEG C. The stretch bath preferably contains about 2-10 g./l. of sulphuric acid and the stretch is preferably 95-100 per cent. In the example, there is added to viscose, containing 8.5 per cent of cellulose and 5.9 per cent of caustic soda, ammonium sulphide solution chemically equivalent to 0.9 per cent of NH4HS, calculated on the viscose. The viscose, after having been ripened to a gamma value of 42, is spun into an aqueous coagulating bath containing 65 g./l. of sulphuric acid, 235 g./l. of sodium sulphate and 50 g./l. of zinc sulphate and having a temperature of 55 DEG C. and a length of 40 cm., the thread withdrawal speed being 45 m/min. The products are thereafter stretched by 80 per cent in an aqueous bath at 90 DEG C. containing 10 g./l. of sulphuric acid. The process increases the tensile strength and elongation of the threads.
