Abstract
In the production of regenerated cellulose filaments and like products from viscose, there is added to the viscose 0.5-10 per cent by weight, based on the weight of the cellulose in the viscose, of a water-soluble compound of average molecular weight 600-10,000, preferably 1000-3000, obtainable by the action of at least 7 mols. of ethylene oxide on one mol. of an aliphatic acid, amide, alcohol or aldehyde, and the viscose is extruded at a salt point of 5-18 into an aqueous coagulating bath containing sulphuric acid in a percentage equal to 0.8-1.5 times the percentage of caustic soda in the viscose and 3-20 per cent of zinc sulphate. The polyethylene oxide condensation product preferably contains 24-72 ethylene oxide mols. and the acid, amide, alcohol or aldehyde used as a starting material may have a carbon chain of any desired length, subject to the prescribed limitation regarding the molecular weight of the condensation product. The viscose may be spun in an unripened condition. The freshly spun filaments are preferably stretched while they are passing through an aqueous bath of a hot dilute acid, as described in Specification 467,500, [Group IV]. The percentage of caustic soda in the viscose is preferably 6-8 and the preferred total sulphate concentration in the coagulating bath is 18-26 per cent. In an example, viscose containing 7 per cent of caustic soda, 7.5 of cellulose, 41 of carbon disulphide (based on the weight of alpha-cellulose) and 1.0 (based on the weight of cellulose) of the condensation product of 27 mols. of ethylene oxide with 1 mol. of ricinoleic acid is spun at a salt point of 11.9 into an aqueous coagulating bath containing 7.7 per cent of sulphuric acid, 14 of sodium sulphate and 9.4 of zinc sulphate and having a temperature of 55 DEG C. The filaments are withdrawn from the coagulating bath and stretched 87 per cent in a hot aqueous bath containing 3.0 per cent of sulphuric acid, 0.8 of sodium sulphate and 0.4 of zinc sulphate. The filaments produced have a thick skin, a non-crenulated surface and a high wet tenacity. Specifications 541,099, [Group IV], 785,616, 792,548, and U.S.A.
