Abstract

Artificial sponges are made from unripened viscose to which an additional quantity of carbon disulphide is added before or during the addition of pore-forming substances. Preferably, water-soluble salts, which when heated dissolve in their water of crystallization, are used as pore-forming substances. Crystals of sodium sulphate, di- and tri-sodium orthophosphate, sodium carbonate, and borax are specified. Acid salts, or strongly coagulating salts such as salts of ammonia or polyvalent metals are excluded. In an example, cellulose xanthate is obtained and dissolved in water or dilute alkali. Carbon disulphide is added together with cotton fibres and then crystals of one or more salts are added. The mass is introduced into moulds and subjected to a heated atmosphere preferably at a temperature above 100 DEG C. After the regeneration is complete, washing, bleaching, and other desired operations are carried out.
