Abstract
Filled plaster of Paris constructional materials containing not less than 12 per cent. of fibrous filler (e.g. a natural cellulose material), are produced by a process involving extrusion of the filled paste (e.g. through rollers, or through orifices of the appropriate shape, or by pressing between plates) wherein the maintenance of the dispersion of the fibrous filler is assisted by inclusion of a small proportion, preferably between 1/4 per cent. and 5 per cent. by weight of the total solids in the mixture, of a water soluble alkyl, hydroxyalkyl or alkyl hydroxyalkyl cellulose ether. If the viscosity of the cellulose ether is in the neighbourhood of 4000 centipoises in 2 per cent. aqueous solution there is preferably included from 0,5 per cent. to 1,5 per cent. of the total solids of cellulose ether. The fibrous filler is preferably dispersed in the aqueous cellulose ether solution before the addition of the plaster of Paris required to form the paste, and the paste may be aerated during its formation.
