Abstract

A dry composition which, dispersed in water, yields an adhesive suitable for use in the manufacture of multiple-layer, corrugated paperboard, comprises ungelatinized starch and granular sodium carboxymethyl cellulose, the weight ratio of the latter to the starch being in the range 0,005-0,100 to 1. The composition may also comprise 0,5 to 8%, by weight, of powdered borax, computed on the starch. A composition which yields a water-resistant adhesive may also comprise granular resorcinol and/or a granular, water-soluble urea-formaldehyde, acetoneformaldehyde or resorcinol-formaldehyde resin. The amount of urea-formaldehyde resin may be between 10 and 30% of the weight of starch. Caustic soda and, if desired, paraformaldehyde, or alternatively, ammonium chloride or sulphate, sodium bisulphate, hydrochloric, sulphuric or acetic acid may be dissolved in the water. Starch modified by treatment with heat, moisture, sodium hypochlorite, hydrochloric acid, ethylene oxide or acetic anhydride, may be used. U.S.A. Specifications 2,102,937, 2,212,557, 2,529,851, 2,626,934 and 2,650,205 are referred to.ALSO:A dry composition which, dispersed in water, yields an adhesive suitable for use in the manufacture of multiple-layer, corrugated paperboard, comprises ungelatinized starch and granular sodium carboxymethyl cellulose, the weight ratio of the latter to the starch being in the range 0,005-0,100 to 1.
