Abstract

A coating composition, e.g., for paper, comprises finely divided clay, water, and heat-pasted, thin-boiling peroxide oxidized cereal starch, said starch having a Scott viscosity of 45 to 55 seconds and a Stormer viscosity of 35 to 50 seconds. The starch is treated with peroxide of hydrogen or of an alkali metal below the gelatinization temperature, in the presence of copper, manganese, or a compound thereof, e.g., 0.1 per cent. of copper sulphate. The starch may be pasted in 2 1/2 times its weight of water at 200-205 DEG F.ALSO:Starch for paper coating compositions is pasted e.g. at 200-205 DEG F., and is thin-boiling and peroxide-oxidized cereal starch, e.g., maize, having a Scott viscosity of 45 to 55 secs. and a Stormer viscosity of 35 to 50 secs. The treatment with peroxide e.g. of hydrogen or an alkali metal being in the presence of metallic copper, or manganese or of a compound thereof e.g. 0.1 per cent. of copper sulphate.
