Abstract

Polythene is heated in the presence of free oxygen to render it adherent to metal foil. The polythene, which may be blended with polyisobutylene, is heated, e.g. as granules, in air or oxygen to a temperature below that at which substantial decomposition occurs, e.g. in air at 140-200 DEG C. The heat-treated polythene may be extruded as a film which is drawn down to a fraction of its extruded thickness during or before application to the metal foil.
