Abstract
A continuous, closely adherent oxalate coating is formed on a surface composed of nickel, chromium or an alloy containing nickel or chromium or both in a total amount of at least 8 per cent by treatment with an aqueous solution of oxalic acid, ferric oxalic and one or more of a bromide, erricyanide and thiocyanate, preferably at a temperature between 150 DEG F. and boiling point. One or more of a sulphide, sulphite and thiosulphate may be present as an accelerator and the ferric oxalate may be formed in situ by reaction between ferrous oxalate and an oxidizing agent such as sodium bromate or chlorate. The treatment may be effected by immersion or spraying.
