Abstract

A continuous, closely adherent, sulphide coating is formed on a chromium-containing steel surface by treating the surface with an aqueous solution of pH not exceeding 1.1 and containing a sulphite and chloride, bromide, iodide or thiocyanate ions or a mixture of such ions. The solution may be given the desired pH by the use of hydrochloric, sulphuric, nitric, phosphoric or oxalic acids; the use of benzene sulphuric and trichloracetic acids is also referred to. The coated sheet may be subjected to plastic deformation.
