Abstract

Metal articles are treated with an aqueous dispersion of a coating composition which chemically attacks the surface and generates ions which render the dispersion unstable adjacent to the surface and cause coagulation of the disperse composition on the surface. Preferred compositions are aqueous, acidified with organic or mineral acid to pH below 5, preferably below 3.5; the coating material may be a butadiene-styrene co-polymer, an acrylic or vinyl-acrylic co-polymer, and a fatty-acid-esterified epoxy resin. The compositions may be applied by dipping, spraying and flowcoating.
