Abstract

An adherent coating is formed on the surface of steels, Cr, Ni and Cr-Ni alloys by contact with an aqueous acid solution of phosphoric acid, oxalic acid and hydrogen sulphide. The solution may also contain manganese or ferric iron which may be added as dihydrogen orthophosphates, pyrophosphates, polyphosphates or metaphosphates. The phosphoric acid may be ortho-, pyro- or poly-phosphoric acid. Hydrogen sulphide may be added as such or as an alkali metal bisulphite, thiosulphate or sulphide. The coatings are said to facilitate cold deformation after application of soap solution. German Specification 731,045 is referred to.
