Abstract

554,654. Coating metals. ABBEY, A. (American Chemical Paint Co.). Aug. 25, 1941, No. 10841. [Class 82 (ii)] The surfaces of ferrous articles are coated by subjecting them to the action of an acid zinc phosphate solution containing hydrogen peroxide and maintaining the operating pH value substantially constant and above the pH at equilibrium of the solution at the same temperature by the substantially continuous addition of a neutralising agent for phosphoric acid, e.g. caustic soda. the solution being applied at a temperature not above 190‹ F. The solution may be sprayed on the surfaces, and its pH maintained at between 0.1-0.4 above the equilibrium value so as to produce a paint-binding phosphate coating within one minute, and contains 1-5 gms. per litre of zinc, and 0.04-0.24 per litre of hydrogen peroxide.
