Abstract
A solution for cleaning iron or steel or articles with an iron or steel surface comprises hydrogen peroxide and either nitric acid, hydrochloric acid, or a mixture of nitric acid and another pickling acid, e.g. a mixture of nitric and sulphuric acids or nitric and phosphoric acids. The temperature of the solution is kept at or below about 60 DEG F. The cleaning of high-carbon steels, chromium - containing rustless steels, and highly polished steels is referred to. The hydrogen peroxide acts as an inhibiting agent. Specifications 8667*/06, [Class 82, Metals and alloys], 28131/09, and 247,071, [both in Class 82 (ii), Washing granular &c.], are referred to.ALSO:Iron or steel or articles with an iron or steel surface are pickled in an aqueous solution of hydrogen peroxide and either nitric acid, hydrochloric acid, or a mixture of nitric acid and another pickling acid, e.g. a mixture of nitric and sulphuric acids or of nitric and phosphoric acids. The temperature of the solution is kept at or below about 60 DEG F. and the hydrogen peroxide acts as an inhibiting agent. The solutions are particularly applicable to the pickling of high-carbon steels, chromium-containing rustless steels, and highly polished steels to give a surface suitable for painting, enamelling, sherardizing, or a phosphating rust-proofing treatment.
