Abstract

A protective coating is formed on aluminium, magnesium, or their alloys by treatment in a bath, preferably hot, containing one or more neutral complex salts, the anion of which comprises the element fluorine with one or several other elements, the cation being of any character, and one of the elements in the salt being an element above aluminium in the electro-chemical potential series. Baths containing molybdenum compounds or salts of metals of the iron group are excluded from the scope of the invention. The bath may be replenished either by the addition of the complex fluoride or by the addition of a simple fluoride which will react in the bath to form the complex salt. The following baths are specified: (a) a solution containing potassium ortho-or meta-fluoranadate, sodium fluosilicate, and sodium potassium tartrate as a pickling agent; (b) a solution containing potassium fluotitanate, chromium fluoride, and sodium fluoride. The latter bath may be replenished by the addition of titanium fluoride. Tartrates, citrates, fluorides, &c. may be added to dissolve or precipitate the secondary products of the reaction. The coatings formed may be subsequently treated with greases, oils, waxes, gums, tar, &c. Specifications 302,943 and 273,956, [both in Class 82 (ii), Washing granular &c.], are referred to.
