Abstract

Iron articles prior to enamelling with nitreous enamel are pickled to form a pickling residue in the form of a black layer which is fixed by treatment in a nickel plating bath and then passivated. After degreasing the iron is pickled in a cold aqueous solution containing by volume 50% HCl, 2% HNO3 and 0.2% chromic acid, rinsed and then pickled in a cold aqueous solution containing by volume 5% HNO3 and 0.1% copper sulphate. The fixing is effected in an aqueous plating bath containing by volume 2% inhibited phosphoric acid, 3% nickel sulphate and 1% borax at 50-80 DEG C. and finally passivated in a boiling weakly alkaline solution containing by volume 0.5% sodium nitrite and 0.5% borax and optionally phosphates.ALSO:Iron articles prior to enamelling with vitreous enamel are pickled to form a pickling residue in the form of a black layer which is fixed by treatment in a nickel plating bath and then passivated.
