Abstract

Before electrodepositing a coating of paint on a metal surface, the surface is cleaned by treatment with an aqueous alkaline solution which contains alkali borate but is substantially free of silicate and is then treated with a zinc phosphate solution to form a phosphate coating. Preferably the cleaning solution, which is applied at 50 to 70 DEG C. by spraying, contains a non-ionic surface active agent, such as a condensation product of ethylene oxide with an alkyl phenol, fatty alcohol or fatty amine or polypropylene oxide, and a phosphate coating activator such as activated titanium phosphate and optionally a condensed phosphate e.g. sodium pyro-, tripoly-, or hexameta-phosphate, as in Specification 932,987. The phosphating solution which may also be applied by spraying contains an accelerator such as nitrates and/or nitrites, hydrogen peroxide, chlorates, bromates or organic nitro compounds. If hot galvanized surfaces are to be treated the phosphating solution contains also a nickel salt and/or a simple or complex fluoride e.g. a silicofluoride. The phosphating step may be followed by a dip in a hexavalent chromium solution e.g. chromic acid, the cleaning, phosphating and chromate treatments being each followed by a water rinse unless the borate content of the cleaning solution is very low when washing may be omitted. Examples are given for treating motor car bodies and sheets of steel and in the latter case the phosphating solution includes nickel and silicofluoride in addition to zinc, nitrate and nitrite. Comparison tests on coated articles are given using a cleaner containing disodium orthophosphate or sodium pyrophosphate in place of the alkali borate.
