Abstract

Zinc and cadmium surfaces are given a corrosion-resistant coating by treatment with an aqueous acidic solution consisting of chromic acid or a salt thereof, formic acid or a formate, nitric acid or a salt thereof, until a visible coating is formed, the sulphuric acid or sulphate being present in amount sufficient to produce a bronze colour. A suitable solution contains sodium bichromate 30-70 gm./l.; formic acid 30-60 cc./l.; zinc nitrate 10-30 gm./1.; and sulphuric acid 4-10 cc./1.; the pH range being 1-3.4. Temperatures of 33-212 DEG F., and preferably 80-90 DEG F. may be used.
