Abstract

In a process of forming a coloured chromate coating on zinc or cadmium the metal is dipped in an aqueous chromating solution containing 0.5-5 g./l. chromic acid and sufficient sulphate and nitrate ions to give a chromic acid/sulphate ratio of 0.5-2 and a chromic acid/nitrate ratio of 0.05-0.2, and then dipped in an aqueous dye solution containing 0.1-5 g./l. of dye, 0.2-20 g./l. of chromic acid and having a pH of 3-11. The chromic acid may be added as such or as chromates, bichromates or polychromates of Na, K, NH4 and Zn and the first solution should have a pH less than 2. The dye solution may contain other ions such as sulphate, acetate, nitrate, borate, chloride and fluoride and the pH is adjusted with NaOH, KOH, HNO3, H2SO4 or acetic acid. The dyes exemplified are azosalicylic dye, acid anthraquinone, monoazo and diazo dyes.
