Abstract

1294490 Chromating metal surfaces CHUBB FIRE SECURITY Ltd 13 May 1970 [24 May 1969] 23255/70 Addition to 1159420 Heading C7U A Zn, Fe or Al surface is so contacted with a solution of chromic and hydrofluoric acids that not more than 50% of the solution applied runs back into the bath and the solution remaining on the surface contains from 0À06 to 3 g/sq.m CrO 3 and 0À1 to 6 g/sq.m HF, the duration and temperature being such that from 0À2 to 2 g/sq.m of metal is etched from the surface. The solution may be dried to form the chromate coating or the solution may be washed off and a solution containing hexavalent chromium applied. The metal surface may first be degreased in solutions of NaOH and Na 5 P 3 O 10 or chlorinate hydrocarbons.
