Abstract

A method of forming a composite bright-nickel chromium coating is characterized in that after the application of the bright nickel layer and before the application of the chromium layer, the bright-nickel layer is provided with a thin layer of nickel which, in the cass electro-motive series (5% Na Cl acidified to pH=3 with acetic acid) has a potential relative to a calomel electrode \sF - 275 mV. The second layer of nickel may be deposited from a Watts bath, or from a Watts bath to which one of the following additions have been made:-cumarin, a -benzenesulphonic acid, p-toluene-sulphonamide, cobalt sulphate, nickel formate or formaldehyde, and may comprise a satin like nickel layer of thickness 0.1-1 micron, or a bright nickel layer of thickness 0.1-10 microns.
