[Also in Group XXXVI] A method for the production of a decorative composite sheet is characterized by cladding a flexible ferrous metal sheet, such as a sheet of steel, on each of its sides with relatively thin sheets of wrought aluminium or a wrought aluminium alloy, rolling the clad ferrous metal sheet into a spirally coiled solid cylinder, with or without a paper or other non-metallic interlayer, coating the edges of the sheet forming the ends of the cylinder with a film of masking material which is not removed from the edges of the sheet by an anodizing bath and which has sufficient flexibility to permit the metal coil to be unwound without cracking the film from the edge of the metal sheet, unrolling the coil, subjecting the aluminium surfaces to anodic oxidation, dyeing the resulting aluminium oxide film and then sealing the pores thereof. The aluminium-clad ferrous metal sheet may be formed by welding the aluminium on to the ferrous sheet by a roll forming process or by depositing the aluminium by hot dipping and then passing the bimetallic sheet between rolls to bring the outer layers of aluminium to a wrought condition. Aluminium or an alloy thereof may be used as a masking material and applied in molten form by a metallizing spray gun. As shown, a ferrous metal core 1, of iron, steel or an alloy steel has, on its surfaces, layers 2, 2 of wrought aluminium or alloy of aluminium whose outer surfaces carry films of aluminium oxide 3, 3 having a dye permanently sealed within its pores. Sealing of the pores may be effected by treatment with an aqueous solution of a salt of a heavy metal, such as, for example, nickel acetate.
