Abstract
557,045. Treating metal surfaces. PROTECTIVE METAL FINISHES, Ltd., and BERGSTEIN, G. K. April 29, 1942, Nos. 5725/42, 14230/42 and 2607/43. [Class 82 (ii)] Iron articles are provided with a rust-resisting surface by treatment at 100-200‹C. with an alkaline bath containing an oxidizing agent and an alkali metal silicate. The oxidizing agent may be an alkali metal nitrate, chlorate, permanganate, or peroxide, or a biochromate or nitrophenol, with or without the addition of a nitrite, and the alkali may be caustic soda. The bath may be regenerated by the addition of a mixture of caustic soda, sodium silicate, sodium nitrate, lime, and manganese dioxide. After treatment in the bath, the articles may be dipped in an acid solution of sodium bichromate, or in dilute acetic or other acid. The articles may be preheated before treatment, such as by immersion in boiling water or weak acid. In some cases an iron salt, a heavy metal oxide or cyanide, or urea may be added to the solution.
