Abstract

331,428. Taylor, J., and Keller, A. V. Aug. 29, 1929. Adhesives; sizes.-Urea, thiourea, substituted ureas or their derivatives, are condensed with a solid anhydrous polymer of formaldehyde, e.g. paraformaldehvde in the presence of water or steam, and the resulting solution concentrated at not more than 90‹ C. to obtain a transparent gel used as an adhesive. The product is used in solution, or it may be made into wafers, or dried and powdered. Delaying agents such as alkali or alkaline earth salts, or carboxylic acids, or accelerating agents such as hexamethylenetetramine, pyridine, or ammonia may be added to the adhesive or applied to the surfaces to be united. Acid or basic dyes or mineral pigments, substances to increase the flexibility such as glycerol, natural oils, or carbohydrates, or aromatic substances may be added. The product is used for uniting surfaces of metal, glass, hardwood, e.g. teak, ivory, celluloid, and leather, especially for impregnating scrap material such as leather waste. The impregnated material may be ground and moulded under pressure and heat. Fabrics are sized and waterproofed by dipping, dusting or spraying with the solid adhesive or its solution.
