Abstract
In making artificial flowers and the like from naturally occurring vegetable tissues such as leaves, the tissues are soaked in a flameproofing solution, drained and dried and then a pigmented finishing coating is applied to them. The finishing solution comprises an alkaline solution of either casein or a sodium salt of alginic acid or of both, potassium silicate, sorbitol and/or glycerine and, where a sodium salt of alginic acid is used, trioxymethylene. Into this mixture is emulsified linseed oil, china-wood oil or a mixture of these and pigments are thereafter either ground in grinding or blending machines or are added in the form of slightly alkaline pastes in water. Potassium carbonate may also be included. If the paint is to be stored a preservative such as sodium benzoate may be added. The paint may be applied by dipping, brushing or spraying and various parts of leaves or twigs may be suitably coloured. The flameproofing solution may contain boric acid, monoammonium phosphate or borax, calcium thiocyanate and glycerine or sorbitol in aqueous solution.
