Abstract

747,107. Cast-surface, mineral coated paper. WARREN CO., S. D. Sept. 22, 1953, No. 26100/53. Class 96. Paper 1 is mineral coated as by a roll 6, air-doctored at 7, applied by a roll 11 to a casting drum 10, whilst the moisture content of the coating is 15 to 50 per cent, peeled after drying, from the drum 10 by a roll 12 and wound up at 13. A pool of aqueous liquid which has been spread by a baffle 15 is maintained against the coated surface at the nip between the rolls 10, 11 to prevent air bubbles from being occluded beneath the paper on the drum 10. Such liquid may contain soap &c., e.g. ammonium stearate, or sulphonated oil to facilitate pulling the paper off the drum, or may contain a wetting agent, formaldehyde, tannic acid, zirconium salts, or a substance to adjust the pH value, or to reduce foaming. The mineral coating may include clay, calcium carbonate, starch, or casein, dimethylol urea, soap, sulphonated castor oil or beef tallow, pine oil, or tributyl phosphate.
