Abstract
334,408. Johnson, J. Y., (I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.-Ges.). Sept. 28, 1929. Fireproofing; proofing-compositions. - Combustible substances are fireproofed by impregnation or coating with solutions or suspensions of combustion retarding agents such as ammonium phosphate or sulphate, silicates, or zinc salts, and urea-formaldehyde condensation products. The latter substances adhere to the material and prevent crystallization. Other agents preventing crystallization such as glue or starch, may be added. In one example, wood is immersed in an aqueous 30 per cent solution of a condensation product obtained by condensing urea with aqueous formaldehyde in the presence of an acid agent, to which solution 20 per cent of its weight of diammonium phosphate has been added. The wood is left in the solution for two hours under a vacuum and for four hours at a pressure above atmospheric. After removing the surplus solution, the timber is dried. In a second example, textile fabric is dipped into an aqueous solution containing from 10 to 20 per cent of diammonium phosphate and from 1 to 2 per cent by weight of water soluble condensation product of urea and formaldehyde, with the optional addition of from 1 to 2 per cent of starch or glue. The fabric is then centrifuged and dried. In a third example, 20 parts by weight of dimethylolurea and 60 parts by weight of diammonium phosphate are dissolved in 100 parts of water, and the mixture is warmed to about 50‹ C., if desired, about 1 part of aqueous 10 per cent sulphuric acid being added. Timber is then immersed in the solution for about ¥ of an hour, preferably under vacuum. The vacuum is then released, and the timber removed and dried.
