Abstract

An improving agent for textiles, paper or leather comprises (i) a pre-condensation product of formaldehyde and either dicyandiamide or melamine, the pre-condensation product having at least one methylol group for each -NH2 group, and (ii) an organic nitrogen containing compound condensable with formaldehyde, in the form of a salt with an inorganic acid or an organic carboxylic acid (the salt having an acidic reaction in aqueous solution) and in quantities of 15-35% (preferably 20%) by weight calculated on the weight of the mixture. The melamine or dicyandiamide is pre-condensed with gaseous formaldehyde, solid paraformaldehyde, or substances yielding formaldehyde in a weakly alkaline medium, the product is isolated in solid form, e.g. by the atomizing drying process, and the salt is added, either before, after or during the drying process. In examples: (1) hexamethylol melamine and urea hydrochloride/starch; (2) pentamethylol melamine, dimethylol dicyandiamide and melamine monophosphate; (3) tetramethylol melamine and dicyandiamide mononitrate; (4) hexamethylol melamine and melamine monoformate, -chloracetate, or hydrochloride, were dissolved in boiled water.
