Abstract

Wood is flame-proofed by treating it with a solution comprising a tetrakis hydroxymethyl phosphonium salt and/or tris hydroxymethyl phosphine oxide, and a polyfunctional organic nitrogen compound capable of reacting with formaldehyde, or the partially polymerized reaction product thereof, and completing the polymerization. The polyfunctional nitrogen compound is one having more than one hydrogen atom attached to nitrogen or to a carbon atom in an aromatic nucleus or more than one methylol group or at least one of each. Examples are urea, melamine, guanidine and alkenoyl amides such as acrylamide; their methylolated or alkylated methylolated derivatives; and their low molecular weight condensation products with formaldehyde. Suitable phosphonium salts are the chloride, acetate, phosphate, formate and sulphate. The solutions may be aqueous or in organic solvents, e.g. mineral spirits. The latter case, they may contain alkyd resins and pigments and fillers, and are useful as surface coating compositions. A catalyst is preferably used when the phosphine oxide or a weak salt of the phosphonium compound is used, and may be acidic or basic, e.g. hydrochloric, acetic and other conventional acid catalysts, and alkali metal carbonates and bicarbonates, triethanolamine and diethanoamine.
