[Also in Divisions B2, C3 and D2] A planographic plate material is produced by forming a continuous paper web on a papermaking machine, drying to a water content of 5-30% by wt., immediately applying to both sides of the moist web a coating of an aqueous insolubilizable sizing composition, partially drying the coated web so that the coatings are moist but not tacky, immediately applying to each side of the moist web substantially equal amounts of an aqueous self-insolubilizable coating, at least one of the coatings being a planographic composition, heating the web to dry it, and calendering. The basic paper web may be formed from a furnish incorporating melamineformaldehyde resin. The sizing coating may comprise a hydrophilic film-forming material, e.g. polyvinyl alcohol, starch, casein, zein, gum arabic, gelatin, carboxy-methyl cellulose or hydroxyethyl starch and a hardening agent e.g. glyoxal, dimethylolurea, other formaldehyde sources, or metal salts such as zinc acetate or copper sulphate, depending on the film-forming component. The sizing coating may contain a hardening agent, or the second coating may contain a hardening agent for the first coating. The planographic composition may comprise a hydrophilic film-forming material e.g. polyvinyl alcohol, sodium carboxymethyl cellulose or sodium alginate, and a hardening agent as above, depending on the film-forming component. Both compositions may contain fillers e.g. colloidal silica or clay or a mixture.
