Abstract

923,712. Printing - surfaces. INTERNATIONAL PAPER CO. Dec. 2, 1960, No. 41491/60. Class 100 (2). A process of making a planographic printing plate comprises applying to a paper base a coating of an aqueous slurry of a finely-divided mineral pigment, a water-soluble aminoaldehyde condensate, and a treated starch consisting of an oxidized starch, a starch acetate ester, an enzyme-converted starch, a dextrin or an acidmodified starch, reacting the amino-aldehyde condensate with the treated starch in the presence of a water-soluble aluminium salt or sodium aluminate, and heating and drying the coating. The dried coating is then treated with an aqueous solution of a water-soluble aluminium salt, e.g. a 10% solution of aluminium chloride, to catalyze the reaction between the amino-aldehyde condensate and the starch component. The slurry may include sodium aluminate in an amount 50% by weight of the amount of the amino-aldehyde condensate. In one example, a starch surface-sized paper sheet is coated with a slurry of the following, expressed by weight: clay 250, zinc oxide 100, oxidized starch 105, urea-formaldehyde 45, butanol 25, and water to make a solids content of 40%.
