Abstract
552,997. Resinous condensation products. AMERICAN CYANAMID CO. Oct. 29, 1941, No. 13929. Convention date, Feb. 27. [Class 2 (iii)] Alkylated aminotriazine-formaldehyde resinous condensation products are made by heating together a methanol - free aqueous formaldehyde solution stabilized by dissolving melamine or methylol-melamine therein, an aminotriazine and a primary alcohol and removing water by azeotropic distillation. The aminotriazine may be melamine, formoguanamine, ammeline, monoamino - 1, 3, 5 - triazine monomethyl - diamino - 1, 3, 5,- triazine or phenyl-diamino-1, 3, 5-triazine. The primary alcohol may be amyl, butyl or octyl alcohol. The mixture of melamine - stabilized aqueous formaldehyde solution and aminotriazine, which may contain also sodium hydroxide or tributyamine may be first heated until a clear solution is obtained ; optionally the alcohol, or formic or phosphoric acid, or methyl acid phosphate, added and heating continued. During distillation dry alcohol is added to replace that distilled off and distillation is completed under reduced pressure. The resin may be dissolved in butyl alcohol and xylene and if desired blended with other resins, cellulose derivatives, drying oils, pigments, driers and fillers to form paints, varnishes, lacquers, adhesives and printing inks.
