Abstract

A thermosetting composition comprises an amino-resin, i.e. a condensation product of urea, thiourea, aminotriazines or the like with aldehyde, and a derivative of a polyhydric alcohol in which one of the hydroxyl groups has been esterified, one or more etherified by reaction with a phenol, alcohol or aldehyde, and one or more remains free, which acts as both a plasticizer and latent accelerator of hardening. Conventional acid hardeners may also be present. The products may be used for moulding, as binders for laminating paper or textiles, or as coating compositions. In examples, a urea-formaldehyde condensate is mixed with monocresyl glycerol butyl oxalate or monocresyl glyceryl monochlorohydrin, dehydrated, and mixed with wood flour, zinc stearate, stearic acid and titanium white or with a -cellulose, aluminium stearate, stearic acid, and zinc sulphide, or used as an adhesive; a melamine-formaldehyde condensate is mixed with monobenzyl-pentaerythritol monochlorhydrin, wood flour and zinc stearate; an aqueous urea-formaldehyde syrup is mixed with a -cellulose, lithopone, red iron oxide and methylated spirits, then used to impregnate paper and moulded to a laminated sheet; a urea-formaldehyde syrup was mixed with p-toluene sulphonic ester of pentaerythritol acetal (having the formula <FORM:0611562/IV(a)/1> a -cellulose, aluminium stearate, stearic acid and zinc sulphide.
