Abstract
<PICT:0623355/IV (a)/1> A colloidal cationic dispersion of partially polymerized aminotriazinealdehyde condensation product is prepared by forming an acidified aqueous solution of a substantially unpolymerized condensation product, the acid producing a pH of 0.5-3.5 when measured at 15 per cent resin solids content, and ageing the solution to polymerize the condensation product until the particles thereof have dimensions within the colloidal range. Suitable aminotriazines are melamine, ammeline, ammelide, formoguanamine, acetoguanamine, propionoguanamine, 4-N-methyl or 4-N-ethyl-2-acetoguanamines. They may be employed as salts. Suitable aldehydes are formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, and propionaldehyde. Water - soluble condensation products prepared by heating the condensation products with lower aliphatic alcohols in presence of small amounts of acid catalyst may also be used. Suitable acids mentioned are hydrochloric, phosphoric formic, acetic, and sulphurous. Sulphuric acid is disclaimed. Examples are given of the preparation of a number of colloidal melamine-formaldehyde condensation product solutions and their behaviour on electrophoresis and coagulation with concentrated acid is described. In Example 4 there is described the preparation of a condensation product from ammeline, formaldehyde and phosphoric acid and its ageing to form a cationic colloidal solution. Example 5 is similar, but uses acetoguanamine and hydrochloric acid. The colloids are substantive towards hydrated cellulose and may be added to paper stock, as described in Specification 622,905. Specification 477,841 also is referred to.
