Abstract

810,828. Sized, mineral-filled paper. WARREN CO., S. D. July 5, 1955 [Aug. 11, 1954], No.19406/55. Class 96. In making sized, mineral-filled paper, finely divided particles of a mineral filler are mixed with an aqueous emulsion or dispersion of a water-repellent dimer of a ketene having a hydrocarbon group containing 6 to 20 carbon atoms so that the particles are partially or totally coated with the dimer. The coated particles are then mixed with an aqueous suspension of cellulosic fibres, e.g. containing sodium carbonate or alum, starch animal glue or karaya gum, and the resulting pulp is made into a web. During or after drying of the paper, some of the diner may migrate to the cellulosic fibres. The diner may be an aliphatic ketene diner, e.g. hexyl, decyl, tetradecyl, hexadecyl or eicosaryl ketene diner or a ketene dimer derived from oleic acid or a mixture of oleic and stearic acids. Polyoxyethylene sorbitan trioleate may be used to emulsify the dimer. The mineral filler may be calcium or magnesium carbonate, talc, titanium dioxide or clay. The amount of coated filler in the paper may be between 1 and 50 per cent of its air-dry weight. The amount of dimer in the paper is, preferably, at least 0.1 per cent of the air-dry weight of the cellulosic fibres and the dimer in the paper, but 0.05 per cent has been found adequate in the case of unsaturated alkyl ketene dimers. The particles of the mineral filler, after being coated with the ketene dimer, and before being added to the suspension of cellulosic fibres, may be partially or totally coated with an aqueous dispersion of one or more mannogalactans, e.g. a plant mucilage containing mannogalactans, and, if desired, starch. Suitable mucilages are locust bean and guar gum and those obtained from the flame tree, the Indian rhododendron, the huisache shrub, the Kentucky coffee tree, the mesquite and the palo verde. The air-dry weight of the mannogalactan coating may be 0.5 per cent of that of the mineral filler. Specifications 522,204, 778,791 and U.S.A. Specification 2,627,477 are referred to.
