Abstract

Reactive size comprises an aqs. emulsion contg. >=1 novel long-chain succinic acid anhydride deriv. of formula (I):- In (I) (m+n)=13; R' is H or opt. branched alkyl gp.; pref. Me,Et, Pr, iso-Pr, n-Bu, iso-Bu, pentyl, hexyl, heptyl, octyl, oleyl, stearyl, pentaerythrityl or glyceryl, and esp. such that (I) contains >28C atoms. Pref. (I) comprises the reaction product of maleic anhydride and oleic acid or an alkyl oleate, and esp. octyl oleate, or a material contg. >=1 such cpds. may be used. Used as internal or surface size for paper, giving effective and reproducible results, (I) are completely compatible with the usual sizing agents. They can be converted into stable emulsions having longer half-life periods than the usual products. They are obtained from relatively cheap starting materials. The size is used in amts. of 0.05-3%, esp. 1-2.5%, w.r.t the dry wt. of the compsn.
