Abstract

Cpds. of formula (I): where Z = H or CH3, R = H, CH3, OR'1, R1 = H or carboxylic acyl, A' = alkyl (1-3C) are prepd. by methylating (CH3I) a 3,3-ethylenedioxy 20-oxo-19 norpregna-5,9-diene, followed by acid hydrolysis of the ethylenedioxy gp. and opt. acylation. Methylation gives a mixt. of mono- and dimethylated material, separable before or after hydrolysis.
