Abstract

In the production of a bleached semi-chemical pulp from cellulose-containing raw material, the material is first subjected to a partial chemical disintegration, then bleached, and finally mechanically defibrated. The partial chemical disintegration may be effected by any known process, but is preferably carried out with an acid sulphite solution. The bleaching also may be carried out with known agents especially chlorine-containing bleaching agents, such as sodium hypochlorite, per-compounds such as peroxides, per-acids and their salts, in either acid or neutral or, most desirably, alkaline media. After bleaching, the mixture is mechanically divided in a pulping apparatus, for example, a disc mill, conical pulping mill or edge mill. In a preferred embodiment the mixture is subjected to a preliminary mechanical defibration after the partial chemical disintegration, but before the bleaching process. Up to 10 per cent, preferably 2-4 per cent, of dissolved silicate may advantageously be added to the bleaching solution, which should comprise up to 2.5, preferably 0.125-2.5, gram equivalents of bleaching agent per kg. of dry fibre pulp, and also 0.5-10 per cent of alkali hydroxide, based on the pulp.
