Abstract

Fibres of cotton, hemp, linen, jute, disintegrated paper or regenerated cellulose &c., are acetylated in the absence of a solvent for acetylated fibres, with retention of the fibre structure, to a degree not higher than the diacetate, and compressed &c. to form fibre-board &c. In an example, bleached sulphate cellulose is acetylated to 29 per cent of combined acetic acid, using 5 per cent of zinc chloride, 25 of acetic anhydride, and 70 of glacial acetic acid.
