Abstract

Sheets of fibrous textile materials are made by incompletely esterifying cellulose fibres with an organic acid or its anhydride, whilst maintaining their fibrous structure, forming a layer of fibres at least partly composed of the fibres so produced, and rendering the cellulose triester phase of the incompletely-esterified cellulose fibres adhesive to bond the fibres in the layer together. The incompletely-esterified fibres, which may be prepared from natural cellulose such as cotton, hemp, ramie, jute and flax, or from regenerated cellulose such as continuous or discontinuous viscose rayon filaments, may be rendered adhesive by heating, preferably with simultaneous or subsequent application of pressure, or by treatment with a solvent or plasticizer, methylene chloride being suitable. The formed sheet may be treated with a saponifying agent in order to remove some or all of the ester groupings. In examples, ramie, cotton linters, or viscose rayon staple fibres, after pretreatment with glacial acetic acid (in some cases containing a small proportion of sulphuric acid) are partially acetylated by treatment for limited periods in baths containing acetic anhydride mixed with sulphurfree toluene or carbon tetrachloride, and, in some cases, with small proportions of sulphuric acid. After removal of the treating fluids, and drying, the fibres are formed into webs and treated with methylene chloride. Specifications 280,493, [Class 2 (ii)], and 10246/38 (as open to inspection under Sect. 91) are referred to.
