Abstract

517,464. Artificial silk; cellulose derivatives. WALLACH, R. May 26, 1938; Nos. 15793 and 17070. [Class 2 (ii)] Cellulosic textile fibres of wool-like character are obtained by applying to loose cellulosic fibres, reagents in a non-uniform or irregular manner so as to convert the cellulose or cellulose derivative of the fibres to a cellulose compound of different chemical composition while maintaining the fibrous structure, the conversion being effected at irregularly spaced intervals throughout the length of the fibres. Irregular application of the reagent may be effected by spraying the fibres with a solution of the reagent. The treated fibres have a permanent crinkle and show irregularity in the physical fibrous structure. To facilitate the conversion the fibres may be treated with swelling agents. Natural or artificial fibres including continuous filaments and staple fibres may be treated. Natural fibres include those from sisal, hemp, jute, flax, kapok, palm, coconut, ramie, china-grass, seaweed, cornstalk, or cotton. Artificial fibres include those of cellulose esters and ethers, and regenerated cellulose. Swelling agents which may be used include organic or inorganic bases, alkaline salts, organic or inorganic acids, zinc chloride, or thiocyanates, for cellulose materials, and acetone, esters, methylene chloride, ethyl alcohol, or di-ethylene glycol, for cellulose ester materials. Cellulose materials may be converted to cellulose esters or ethers including carboxylates, xanthates, and thiourethanes. The cellulose may be condensed with aldehydes, quaternary ammonium compounds, urea, pyrrole, pyridine, piperidine, or pyridinium compounds. Cellulose fibres may be treated, e.g. by spraying a solution of octadecyl-oxymethyl pyridinium chloride and then heated to a temperature above 90‹C. so as to cause the cellulose to combine with the decomposition products. Cellulose ester materials may be subjected to saponification treatment, e.g. cellulose triacetate fibres may be converted non-uniformly or irregularly along their length into cellulose diacetate. A cellulose ether may be subjected to further etherification, or to esterification. If desired the chemical reagent may be applied uniformly to the fibres and the activity of the reagent may be modified in an irregular manner along the length of the fibres. The treated fibres may be used in the production of fabrics, felts, filter material, diaphragms, and moulded articles. In an example, cellulose hydrate staple fibres are sprayed with caustic alkali solution while they are spread out in a thin layer. They are then treated with ethylene chlorohydrin. Specifications 233,704, 332,263, [both in Class 2 (ii)], and 498,763 are referred to.
