Abstract

516,698. Acetylation of artificial fibres. SOC. DES USINES CHIMIQUES RHONEPOULENC, BIDAUD, A. F., and CHEVALIER, P. J. July 5, 1938, No. 19904. [Class 2 (ii)] In a process for the' esterification of regenerated cellulose fibres, with retention. of, fibrous nature, lithium acetate is used as a catalyst for the acetylation, either by pretreatment or in the acetylating medium or both. In examples, regenerated cellulose is impregnated with concentrated.aqueous lithium acetate, dried and acetylated with boiling acetic anhydride containing lithium acetate, or with acetic anhydride and toluene. In other examples, the cellulose is treated with water containing softening agents and/or zinc chloride or aqueous acetic acid, drained and rinsed with glacial acetic acid, and acetylated,with acetic anhydride and lithium acetate.
