Abstract
Alginic acid derivatives are produced by first swelling in an aqueous medium, then displacing the water by an organic liquid while maintaining the swollen state, and finally treating with the necessary reagents for preparing the derivative. The alginic acid may be in powder, film or fibrous form. In examples: (1) alginic acid yarn is soaked in water, then treated with successive charges of glacial acetic acid and finally acetylated with acetic anhydride, benzene and sulphuric acid, the benzene being a non-solvent; the product may be purified with benzene and ether; (2) alginic acid powder is treated similarly; (3) the displacing of the water is effected with methyl alcohol; (4) and (5) alginic acid yarn is soaked in normal sulphuric and perchloric acid respectively, dehydrated with acetic acid and acetylated with acetic anhydride and benzene; (9) alginic acid yarn is soaked in normal perchloric acid, dehydrated with acetic acid, and esterified with propionic anhydride and benzene. The production of butyrate and acetobutyrate esters is mentioned. Specification 19330/05, [Class 2], is referred to.
