Abstract

480,679. Surface treatment of paper or cardboard. JOHNSON, G. W. (I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.-Ges.) July 24, 1936, No. 20540. [Class 96] The surface of paper or cardboard is treated by acting with an aqueous solution of a water soluble cellulose ether or an alkaline solution of a water insoluble cellulose ether on the paper strip while it is on the sieve of the paper machine, the said cellulose ether solution containing fillers and if desired a starch preparation such as potato meal, maize starch, or hydrolyzed starch. When cylinder machines are employed the cylinder preferably has a greater diameter than that of the usual cardboard machines. Suitable water soluble cellulose ethers are the ether formed from alkali cellulose and chlorethane sulphonic acid, cellulose glycol ethers containing a free OH group in the glycol radicle, and ethers of alkali cellulose with chloracetic acid or its esters. A suitable water insoluble ether is cellulose methyl ether. Suitable fillers are satin white, titanium white which consists of titanium oxide and barium sulphate, blanc fixe, kaolin, and talc or any filler with a particle size less than À4Á. When an alkaline cellulose ether solution is employed it may be subsequently acidified by treating with acid solutions, e.g. aqueous aluminium sulphate on the paper-making machine or in a brushing machine, or by treatment with steam laden with acid vapours in the dry part of the machine or while hanging. Waxes such as Japan wax or Montan wax may be added to the cellulose ether solutions to increase the lustre of the paper surface. Specifications 423,471 and 458,815 are referred to.
