Abstract

501,666. Esterifying and finishing cellulose fabrics. DISTILLERS CO., Ltd., and STAUDINGER, H. P. Sept. 8, 1937, No. 24496. [Class 2 (ii)] Woven or knitted cellulosic fabrics having a coherent uninterrupted structureless surface are prepared by superficially esterifying the fabric, rendering the surface layer of cellulose ester pliable, and then heat-treating the fabric under pressure sufficient to unify the surfaces of adjacent threads and form a structureless surface on top of the interior fabric structure. The degree of superficial esterification effected is preferably not less than 5 per cent nor more than 50 per cent of that possible. The surface layer of cellulose ester may be rendered pliable by treating it with a solvent and a plasticizer, e.g. o-phenyl phenol, p-isohexyl phenol, o- or p-normal octyl phenol, p-benzyl phenol or esters of crotonic acid. The fabric may be subjected to a preliminary mercerization. In an example, cotton muslin is steeped in acetic acid containing perchloric acid and esterified in a bath containing acetic anhydride, ethyl acetate and ligroin. The fabric is then steeped in a mixture containing o-phenyl phenol, benzyl alcohol, methylene chloride and alcohol, passed through a heated chamber to recover methylene chloride and alcohol, and passed between heated rollers. In a second example, linen cloth is mercerized, steeped in acetic acid containing perchloric acid and esterified in a solution containing acetic anhydride, crotonic acid and carbon tetrachloride. The cloth is steeped in a solution containing benzyl crotonate, ethylene glycol di-alpha-brombutyrate, acetone and alcohol, squeezed, dried, and pressed between hot plates. In another example, cotton, pretreated as in the first example, is esterified in a bath containing acetic anhydride, stearic acid, monochloracetic acid, magnesium perchlorate and benzene, soaked in a mixture of cyclohexanyl stearate, benzyl acetate, acetone and alcohol. passed through a heated chamber, and finally calendered between hot rollers. Specification 381,991 is referred to.
