Abstract
Polyethylene terephthalate textile materials are treated for a short time, preferably up to ten minutes, with an aqueous emulsion of a chlorinated aliphatic hydrocarbon at a temperature below the boiling-point of the emulsion. The chlorinated aliphatic hydrocarbon may be chloroform, trichloroethylene, dichlorobutane, tetrachlorobutane, s-dichloroethylene, 1:2-dichloroethane or pentachloroethane. Preferred conditions comprise treatment for not more than five minutes in an emulsion containing 2-25 per cent by weight of chlorinated aliphatic hydrocarbon, stabilized by 0.05-4 per cent by weight of wetting agent. Suitable wetting agents are condensation products of polyethylene glycols with fatty acids, fatty alcohols and fatty amines, and addition products of ethylene oxide with alkyl phenols. Examples are given.ALSO:The properties of polyethylene terephthalate textile materials are improved by treating the materials for a short time, preferably up to ten minutes, with an aqueous emulsion of a chlorinated aliphatic hydrocarbon at a temperature below the boiling point of the emulsion. The material may be in the form of threads, fibres or fabric and the chlorinated aliphatic hydrocarbon may be chloroform, trichloroethylene, dichlorobutane, tetrachlorobutane, s-dichloroethylene, 1:2-dichloroethane or pentachloroethane. Preferred conditions comprise treatment for not more than five minutes in an emulsion containing 2-25 per cent by wt. of chlorinated aliphatic hydrocarbon, stabilized by 0.05-4 per cent by wt. of wetting agent. Suitable wetting agents are condensation products of polyethylene glycols with fatty acids, fatty alcohols or fatty amines and addition products of ethylene oxide with alkyl phenols. Strong shrinkage is caused by the treatment, and hence improved resistance to deformation, while the fibres are simultaneously stiffened and roughened, and also become crimped. Examples are given.ALSO:The properties of polyethylene terephthalate textile materials are improved by treating the materials for a short time, preferably up to ten minutes, with an aqueous emulsion of a chlorinated aliphatic hydrocarbon at a temperature below the boiling-point of the emulsion.
