Abstract

Wool-containing garments are crease proofed and shrinkproofed and their resistance to fuzzing, pilling and localized cockling after laundering and air or tumble drying is improved by constructing them from chemically and mechanically stabilized fabric and dimensionally stable components, e.g. sewing thread, zippers, lining and pocketing material; waistband canvasses and tapes, wetting the fabric before or after making it into the garments with an aqueous solution of a water-soluble reducing agent, drying the fabric if the wetting is effected prior to garment manufacture, forming the garments into their desired configuration and steam-pressing and drying. The fabrics may be chemically stabilized by treating them with an aqueous solution containing permonosulphuric acid and a wetting agent at 77 DEG F and then with an aqueous solution of sodium sulphite at 77 DEG F, by the application of less than 5% by weight of a suitable polymer such as polyhexamethylene sebacamide by interfacial polymerization or by treating them with a saturated sodium chloride solution at 110 DEG F, adding potassium permanganate until the bath's initial deep purple colouration turns brown due to water-insoluble manganese dioxide, replacing the bath by clear water and then applying a solution containing sodium bisulphite and acetic acid. The mechanical stabilization of the fabric comprises the removal of relaxation shrinkage by first drying on a single or multi-pass tenter dryer with maximum warp overfeed to prevent or eliminate warp relaxation shrinkage, rewetting and again drying using a conveyor dryer to prevent or eliminate filling relaxation shrinkage. Suitable reducing agents are sodium sulphite, bisulphite and metabisulphite, monoethanolamine sulphite and bisulphite, ammonium thioglycollate and monoethanolamine thioglycollate. The aqueous solution of the reducing agent may contain a wetting agent, e.g. an alkylaryl polyether alcohol. After wetting with the aqueous solution of the reducing agent the garment may be placed on a garment press and steam applied at least at 30 pounds per square inch gauge for 10-30 seconds, the garment press being maintained in a closed position for a further period, e.g. 45 seconds, without the application of steam and a vacuum being subsequently applied to the garment in the open press for drying. Garments made from wool in admixture with nylon may be treated. Specified garments are trousers, straight skirts, pleated skirts, shirts, slacks and suit coats.
