Abstract

A wool-containing garment is crease-proofed and shrink-proofed and its resistance to fuzzing, pilling and localized cockling and puckering after laundering and air or tumble drying is improved by wetting it with an aqueous solution of a water-soluble reducing agent, the concentration of the reducing agent being in the range of 2-15% by weight and the wetting resulting in an increase in weight of the garment in the range 30%-100%, forming it into its desired configuration after wetting, subjecting it to heat and pressure and drying it. Suitable reducing agents are sodium sulphite, bisulphite or meta bisulphite, monoethanol amine sulphite or bisulphite, ammonium thioglycolate and monoethanol amine thioglycolate. The aqueous solution of the reducing agent may contain a wetting agent, e.g. an alkyl aryl polyether alcohol. The fabric from which the garments are made may have been stabilized against shrinkage, may be a wash-wear material prepared by combinations of chemical treatments and/or construction or it may have been presensitized by treatment with a chemical reducing agent, e.g. sodium bisulphite, and drying. After wetting with the aqueous solution of the reducing agent the garment may be placed on a garment press and steam applied at least at 30 pounds square inch gauge for 10-30 seconds, the garment press being maintained in a closed position for a further period, e.g. 45 seconds, without the application of steam and a vacuum being subsequently applied to the garment in the open press for drying. Garments made from wool in admixture with nylon or acrylic fibres may be treated. Specified garments treated are trousers, straight skirts, pleated skirts, shirts, slacks and suit coats.
