Abstract

In a continuous process for treating a wool piece fabric to render it capable of receiving a permanent set or crease, the fabric having a moisture content of 25-100% based on the dry weight of the fabric is passed at a constant rate through a chamber into which a stream of sulphur dioxide is fed at a rate of 5-70 parts by weight of sulphur dioxide for every 100 parts dry weight of the fabric passing continuously through the chamber. After leaving the chamber the fabric may be exposed to air and/or <PICT:0933432/IV(a)/1> rinsed with water to remove any unabsorbed sulphur dioxide present, mangled to remove excess water and dried at a temperature below 80 DEG C. In the drawing a wool piece fabric 1 is passed from a storage roll 2 through a carefully controlled water spray 3 and treatment chamber 4 fed with sulphur dioxide through pipe 5 and is then exposed to air at 6, rinsed in bath 7 and passed through the drier 9 to storage at 11. The fabric may subsequently be made up into garments and given a permanent set or crease by steaming with or without pressure. Specifications 480,448 and 775,486 are referred to.
